Firefly

Firefly uses science fiction merely as a tool, blending it with unusual western atmospheres and believable characters. Its narrative is rich and complex, choosing shades of grey rather than black and white while painting the cast’s psychological traits. Overpopulation, slavism, racism, these are the core themes, always treated with great care and humour. A must for sci-fi fans.

Firefly è una serie di fantascienza solo in superficie, caratterizzata un’inaspettata contaminazione con il western e dai personaggi credibili. La ricca narrazione preferisce dipingere le psicologie del cast con toni di grigio piuttosto che in bianco e nero. Sovrappopolazione, schiavitù, razzismo, questi i temi portanti, sempre trattati con attenzione e humour pungente. Un must per i fan della fantascienza.

A Dance with Dragons

A Dance with Dragons is a step back from the narrative verve of the earlier novels in the saga. R. R. Martin recently seems more interested in utterly diluting the narrative than in surprising the reader, lost in hypertrophic descriptions and widespread stillness. Only the last few chapters stand out, paving the way for the long-awaited final confrontation.

A Dance with Dragons rappresenta un passo indietro rispetto alla verve narrativa dei precedenti romanzi della saga. R. R. Martin sembra ormai più interessato a diluire il più possibile la narrativa che a sorprendere il lettore, perso tra descrizioni ipertrofiche e una generale staticità. Solo gli ultimi capitoli risollevano le sorti, spianando la strada per il sospirato confronto finale.

Fringe Season 4

Fringe’s fourth season has offered few highs and lots of lows. The best episode is Letters of Transit, capable of throwing a disturbing glimpse at the future (and the upcoming final season). Apart from this flick, the rest felt quite predictable, with a less-than exciting season finale. Hopes are for a decent final season.

Appena conclusasi, la quarta stagione di Fringe ha offerto qualche alto e diversi bassi. L’episodio migliore rimane Letters of Transit, capace di gettare un inquietante sguardo sul futuro (e sulla prossima season conclusiva). A parte questo guizzo, il resto sa di già visto, con un season finale davvero poco emozionante. Le speranze sono per un’ultima stagione all’altezza degli esordi.

Mass Effect 3

Bioware walks its own path, making Mass Effect 3 the sum of its RPG style. Divided between shooting (mostly well-made) and multiple-choice dialogue (scripted in an exceptional way), is a hybrid action/RPG that succeeds mostly for the believable characters. Too bad for the moral system, characterized by too sharp a distinction between good and evil.

Bioware va dritta per la sua strada, facendo di Mass Effect 3 la summa del suo stile ruolistico. Diviso tra le fasi shooting (perlopiù ben fatte) e i dialoghi a scelta multipla (sceneggiati in maniera eccezionale), è un ibrido action/GDR che vive soprattutto di personaggi credibili, sfaccettati. Peccato per il sistema morale, caratterizzato da una distinzione troppo netta tra bene/male.

The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games is an enjoyable movie only for those who have read the homonymous book. Despite the good direction, it tells Collins’s teen drama in a cold and detached way. Without the support of the book, some details could slip the viewer’s attention and the opening is unnecessarily boring. Successful, but not quite.

The Hunger Games è un film godibile soprattutto per coloro che hanno letto l’omonimo libro. Per quanto tutto sommato “fredda” nel raccontare il dramma adolescenziale della Collins, la pellicola funziona grazie alla regia capace. Senza il supporto del libro tuttavia, alcuni passaggi potrebbero sfuggire e il lungo incipit potrebbe annoiare. Riuscito sì, ma non del tutto.

Battleship

A true USA-style guilty pleasure, Battleship is the cinematic equivalent of a gigantic and juicy cheeseburger. Brainless yet at times self-conscious, it plays with exaggerations, suspended midway between the worshipping of USA values and their desecration. In this sense, much more mature than Bay, it offers the same emotions, yet with a much better seasoning.

Vero guilty pleasure in abbondante salsa americana, Battleship è l’equivalente cinematografico di un gigantesco e succulento cheeseburger. Decerebrato eppure a tratti autocosciente, diverte con le esagerazioni, sospeso a metà tra la celebrazione dei valori made in USA e la loro dissacrazione. In questo senso, molto più maturo di Bay, offre le stesse emozioni, ma con un condimento nettamente migliore.

Sniper Elite V2

Sniper Elite V2 is simply the best sniping experience available on consoles and PC. If long range shooting fascinates you, you will turn a blind eye to the sometimes lame artificial intelligence and the so-so graphics, and it’ll be worth your while.

Sniper Elite V2 è semplicemente la migliore esperienza di cecchinaggio disponibile su console e PC. Se i tiri dalla distanza vi affascinano, saprete chiudere un occhio nei confronti dell’intelligenza artificiale non eccezionale e della grafica così così, e ne varrà la pena.

The Walking Dead – A New Day

The Walking Dead – A New Day works primarily for one reason: it is, as a matter of facts, a product perfectly placed in the continuity of the comic saga. Telltale Games has finally managed to perfectly match the style of its graphic adventures with a leading brand. A must buy for fans of the comic book saga.

The Walking Dead – A New Day funziona soprattutto per un motivo: è, a tutti gli effetti, un prodotto perfettamente inserito nella continuity della saga originale. Telltale Games è finalmente riuscita a far combaciare alla perfezione lo stile delle sue avventure grafiche con un brand di spicco. Perfetto per i fan della saga a fumetti.

Prototype 2

Prototype 2 is a worthy successor to the first chapter. Bigger, better, more badass (cit.). It will appeal to fans of its predecessor, well spent money for frantic and brainless-action addicted players.

Prototype 2 è un degno successore del primo capitolo. Più casino, più mutazioni, più tutto. Piacerà ai fan del predecessore, e in generale cotituisce un ottimo acquisto per gli appassionati di azione sfrenata, spaccona e senza cervello.

The Avengers

The Avengers is the confirmation that in this second decade the action movie is reaching a true state of grace. Joss Whedon is able to reserve the right space to all characters (no Iron-Man-only show), and, above all, knows how to make you laugh out loud. Could’ve easily lapsed into the ridiculous, yet it works great.

The Avengers è la conferma che l’action movie sta raggiungendo in questi anni ’10 un vero stato di grazia. Joss Whedon riesce a riservare il giusto spazio a tutti i personaggi (niente Iron-Man-only show) e soprattutto sa far ridere e non poco. Poteva facilmente scadere nel ridicolo, invece funziona alla grande.
